Writing a children’s book can be a time-consuming and daunting task, but with the help of artificial intelligence (AI), it can be a breeze. In this article, I show how AI can make the process of writing a children’s book quick and easy, taking care of everything from generating text to creating images.

I’ve never been a very imaginative story-teller. But I’ve always liked technology. So when my cousin’s 3-year-old daughter asked me for a story after our yearly Christmas dinner, I knew just what to do. I opened my laptop, wrote a few words and clicked a few buttons, and had a story ready to go within 10 minutes.

How To write a children’s book with AI

In order to write and narrate a children’s book using only AI, you will need three tools : ChatGPT to write the story, MidJourney to illustrate your story and Riffusion for musical queues. All three a free.

  • The text: I asked ChatGPT to “Write a completely original fairy tale for a 4 year-old girl”. I was not fully pleased with the first draft so I asked “Can you make the characters more three-dimensional?” I recommend getting more creative with your prompt; this was just a Proof-of-Concept.

  • The illustrations: I asked Midjourney to create images using prompts. I tried to keep the visuals of my main character Lily similar throughout the story by using Alice in Wonderland, and a “cartoon” look. All queues are below the images.

  • The music: For added effects, you can use an AI music generator such as Riffusion to set the mood. I used “Calm music to help children fall asleep” as a prompt, which works fairly well.

That’s it. Literally. It’s that easy.

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there lived a little girl named Lily. Lily was a curious and adventurous young girl with a heart full of wonder.

Finally, they reached the tiny door, and Lily stepped through it and back into the real world. As she made her way home, Lily couldn’t wait to tell her friends and family about her incredible adventure in the magical kingdom and the kind fairy who had helped her find her way home. And from that day on, she returned to the magical kingdom every chance she got, always grateful for the kind fairies who had helped her find her way home.

It’s not Shakespeare… but it did the trick. As an added step, I got ChatGPT to write a description and find the relevant tags for Amazon, where I published the book as a Kindle. If you buy it, the AI overlords win.

Good luck out there.

AI can help generate story ideas quickly, but storytelling still requires empathy and judgment. Generative AI assist with structure, yet emotional depth and values come from humans, especially when creating content for children or sensitive audiences.
